# hangulmath — Hangul jamo as mathematical symbols

Version 0.5 (2026-10-10)

Mathematical notation draws almost entirely on Latin and Greek letters.
`hangulmath` adds the 40 letters (jamo) of modern Korean Hangul as math
symbols: 14 basic consonants, 5 double consonants, 10 basic vowels and
11 compound vowels.

```latex
\usepackage{hangulmath}
...
\[ \hangulsum\tiut_{k=1}^{n} \giug_k , \qquad \mium^2 \vec{A} = -\mu_0 \vec{J} \]
```

Each symbol has an official name following the Revised Romanization of
Korean (`\giyeok`, `\nieun`, ...), and consonants have a four-letter
alias that is easy to remember (`\giug`, `\niun`, `\diud`, `\liul`, ...).
Vowels are written as pronounced with a trailing `h` (`\ah`, `\eoh`,
`\uah`). `\hangulsum`, `\hangulint` and `\hangullim` turn any symbol into
a sum-, integral- or limit-like operator.

## Requirements

* **XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX** (the package uses `fontspec`; pdfLaTeX is not
  supported).
* LaTeX kernel 2022-06-01 or later.
* No Korean font needs to be installed: the symbols come from the bundled
  fonts `hangulmath-sans.otf` and `hangulmath-sans-light.otf`.

## Files

| File | Purpose |
|---|---|
| `hangulmath.sty` | the package |
| `hangulmath-metrics.def` | glyph metrics for the bundled font |
| `hangulmath-sans.otf`, `hangulmath-sans-light.otf` | bundled symbol fonts (SIL OFL 1.1) |
| `hangulmath-doc.tex`, `hangulmath-doc.pdf` | documentation |
| `hangulmath-metrics.py` | generates a metrics file for another font (Python 3.10+, fontTools) |
| `hangulmath-fonts.py` | rebuilds the bundled fonts from Noto Sans CJK KR |
| `OFL.txt` | license of the bundled fonts |

## Installation

Install from CTAN with your TeX distribution (`tlmgr install hangulmath`),
or copy `hangulmath.sty`, `hangulmath-metrics.def` and the two `.otf`
files next to your document. In a TDS tree, put the `.sty` and `.def`
files in `tex/latex/hangulmath/` and the fonts in
`fonts/opentype/public/hangulmath/`.

On **Overleaf**, upload the same four files and set the compiler to
XeLaTeX (or add a `latexmkrc` file containing `$pdf_mode = 5;`).

The documentation is compiled with `xelatex hangulmath-doc` (twice); it
uses the Noto Serif CJK KR font for its Korean prose.
